Just what is Tom Bombadil doing in J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings? His bright blue coat and yellow boots seem out-of-place with the grandeur of the rest of the narrative.’ In this book, C.R. Wiley shows that Tom is not an afterthought but Tolkien’s way of making a profoundly important point. Tolkien once wrote, “[Tom Bombadil] represents something that I feel important, though I would not be prepared to analyze the feeling precisely. I would not, however, have left him in, if he did not have some kind of function.”

Lecture: "The Ethos of Anglicanism, Class 2"

Continuing the fascinating discussion with Abp. Peter Robinson, of the United Episcopal Church of North America, Anglicanism gets a scholarly update. Although this religion was summarized timelessly by Lancelot Andrewes,* in 1620, Abp. Peter vividly covers such elements as Luther’s Augustinian influence on Cranmer, as well as liturgical and episcopal continuity from the Papal period, always to focus on the saving work of Christ.

* "One canon reduced to writing by God himself, two testaments, three creeds, four general councils, five centuries, and the series of Fathers in that period – the centuries that is, before Constantine, and two after, determine the boundary of our faith." - Lancelot Andrewes
